"Luke's Loyal Fans" - our wonderful family and friends who came out in support of Luke at last year's Buddy Walk

When I hear stories of how Down syndrome used to be treated, it breaks my heart.  Even just ten years ago, there weren't the programs, initiatives, or education efforts that exist today.  A friend from the Down syndrome moms group I belong to has an 11-year-old with Down syndrome.  I recently saw her at a dinner get-together and she discussed with us what it was like when her daughter was born.  The doctors basically gave her daughter no chance at a quality life and, according to her mom, almost acted as though her diagnosis of Down syndrome was a "death sentence."  She did not have the vast resources available to her, as a parent, that were made available to us from the minute Luke was born.  

Events such as the Buddy Walk help to ensure such programs exist to support Luke and help him reach his full potential.  In the past, no one even realized the potential that existed in these individuals because they simply weren't given a chance to grow, to succeed, to live.  The money raised through organizations like the National Down Syndrome Society will help children and adults, such as Luke, grow, succeed, and live a much higher quality of life.
